Tilapia Tacos al Pastor: A Fresh Twist on a Mexican Favorite

Al Pastor is one of Mexico’s most recognizable flavors, traditionally associated with marinated pork, warm tortillas, pineapple, onion and cilantro.

But those same bold flavors can work beautifully with seafood.

This recipe gives the classic a fresh twist by pairing tender tilapia with Tierra y Sol Al Pastor, fresh pineapple, crunchy cabbage and creamy avocado. The result is a colorful and flavorful taco that brings a different take on a Mexican favorite to the table.

Servings: 8–10 people
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15–20 minutes

For the Tilapia al Pastor

  • 8–10 fresh tilapia fillets
  • 1 package (150 g) Tierra y Sol Al Pastor
  • 4–5 cups orange juice
  • Sea salt to taste

For the Tacos

  • 24–30 nixtamalized corn tortillas
  • 2 cups fresh pineapple, diced
  • 1 cup finely chopped white or red onion
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 2 cups shredded white or purple cabbage
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • Lime wedges for serving
  • Tierra y Sol 3-in-1 Salsas for serving

Instructions

1. Prepare the Al Pastor Sauce

Pour the entire package of Tierra y Sol Al Pastor into a saucepan.

Add 4–5 cups of orange juice and stir until well combined.

Cook over medium heat for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is fully incorporated and heated through.

2. Add the Tilapia

Add the tilapia fillets to the prepared Al Pastor sauce, making sure the fish is well coated.

Cook until the tilapia is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

Once cooked, gently break the fish into large, tender pieces and allow it to rest for a few minutes before assembling the tacos.

3. Prepare the Toppings

While the tilapia rests, prepare the toppings.

Dice the fresh pineapple, finely chop the onion and cilantro, shred the cabbage and slice the avocados.

Warm the corn tortillas on a comal or skillet until soft and pliable.

4. Build the Tacos

Place a generous portion of the Tilapia al Pastor onto each warm tortilla.

Top with shredded cabbage, fresh pineapple, sliced avocado, chopped onion and cilantro.

5. Add the Final Touch

Serve the tacos warm with fresh lime wedges and Tierra y Sol 3-in-1 Salsas at the table so everyone can add their favorite finishing touch.

A Fresh Take on Al Pastor

Mexican cooking is full of recipes that evolve from one table to another. While Al Pastor is traditionally associated with pork, its bold flavor also pairs well with tender fish.

The fresh pineapple adds sweetness, the cabbage brings crunch and the avocado adds a creamy contrast to the Tilapia al Pastor.

Serve everything family-style, bring the warm tortillas to the table and let everyone build their tacos exactly the way they like them.
